CaliforniaChoice: A Crown-Worthy Choice for Dentists

October 13, 2024by Alex Strautman

Are you one of the 30,000+ dentists in California? If so, you might already be offering health insurance and other perks to your team—or perhaps you’re thinking about adding them. But how can you ensure you’re maximizing the value of every benefits dollar you spend? With CaliforniaChoice, you can get more bang for your buck.

Over 23,000 employers in California trust CaliforniaChoice—an innovative multi-carrier, employee-choice private exchange. It delivers “big business benefits” to small businesses and professionals with 100 or fewer employees, all without the hefty price tag. As one of the fastest-growing health plans in the state, CaliforniaChoice has been empowering businesses for over 28 years, including dental offices throughout the state.

Health Insurance for Dentists

Our “California Different” approach is unlike any of our competitors. We recognize that you and your employees are different and your health care needs are unique. Whether you have a single employee, five, 25, 50, or 100 employees, we can give you – and them – more choice. That’s because our program offers greater access to health care providers than any other single health insurance program in California.

1: Find a Plan That’s Right for You

One key benefit of CaliforniaChoice is its flexibility. Depending on where they work and live, each member can choose from 110 HMO, PPO, and HSA-qualified coverage options.

Here are the health plans taking part in CaliforniaChoice for 2025:

  • Anthem Blue Cross
  • Health Net
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Sharp Health Plan
  • Sutter Health Plus
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Western Health Advantage

Keep in mind some plans are available statewide, while others are regional.

Here’s how it works. One of your employees might choose a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plan because it includes a particular doctor or hospital in its network. Another employee, who rarely visits the doctor, might choose a HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plan. A third employee might select a Health Savings Account (HSA)-compatible plan because of its cost and tax advantages. Whatever each of your employees’ needs may be, it’s their choice with CaliforniaChoice.

2: Cost Control for You and Your Business

With CaliforniaChoice, you decide how much you want to contribute to your employees’ premiums.

You can select a Fixed Percentage (50% to 100%) of a specific plan or benefit. Or you can contribute a Fixed Dollar Amount for each employee. (All employees must receive the same contribution toward their premiums.) Employees then applies your contribution to the health plan and benefits they prefer. If the cost exceeds your contribution, they simply pay the difference.

At renewal, you can change your premium contribution for your new plan year. You can adjust it – up or down. It’s your choice. That means you are in control of your benefits costs for another 12 months. Employees are also able to make changes at renewal. They can move to different coverage (HMO, PPO, or HSA-qualified), or to another health plan serving their area.

3: Medical, Dental, and More

CaliforniaChoice offers more than just health coverage. You can give employees the option for ancillary benefits, too:

  • Dental Insurance: Choose from three Dental plans – a MetLife or SmileSaver Dental HMO or an Ameritas Dental PPO.
  • Vision Benefits: Voluntary Vision from Vision One Eyecare offers discounts on vision care services and prescription eyewear.
  • Chiropractic: Landmark Healthplan offers chiropractic benefits including exams and adjustments plus optional benefits for acupuncture.
  • Life and AD&D: Coverage is available from Assurity Life with Accidental Death & Dismemberment benefits and a living benefits provision.
4: No-Cost Extras

The CaliforniaChoice Business Solutions Suite and Member Value Suite include no-cost extra benefits that you and your employees will appreciate. They include:

  • A Premium Only Plan (POP) allows employees to pay their premiums pre-tax; it also reduces your tax liability as an employer.
  • A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) gives employees the ability to set aside a portion of their salary on a pre-tax basis to pay for eligible expenses like copays and prescription drugs. (For groups with 15 or more employees.)
  • COBRA participant invoicing, premium collection, and remittance. (Availability of Cal-COBRA or federal COBRA billing services depends on your company’s group size.)
  • Dental Care services at reduced fees through Dentegra® Smile Club dentists.
  • Savings on hearing tests, hearing aids, batteries, and more from EPIC Hearing Service Plan.
  • Prescription drug savings when using the California Rx Card; cardholders may be able to reduce their Rx out-of-pocket costs to less than their health plan copay.
  • Cal Perks membership; save on tickets to theme and water parks, sporting events, museums, and movies – plus travel and other discounts.
  • Discounted fitness center memberships and savings on wellness services and more.
